What a great book! I read parts aloud to my daughters. I would recommend this book for all parents and for teenagers applying for their driver's licenses. Well written, engaging, and ever so helpful.
Great read!!!! it gives you the necessary tools on how to deal with situations that can quickly go left.... I would highly recommend it for people of all races and ages.
Terrific book! Should be in every high school library in the U.S. Parents should read with their kids. If every family took the messages in this book to heart, we could avoid many of the tragic confrontations between police and citizens that are happening everyday. Kudos to Dr. Varner for writing a much needed book.
As a mentor to young black boys, I appreciated the strategies presented in this book for protecting their lives against the disturbing trend of aggressive police tactics. Dr. Mount Varner's recognition of police violence towards people of color as a public health crisis, and not just a law enforcement issue, changes the conversation and brings home the reality that people of color are systematically being injured and killed under the color of authority leading to devastating effects on the community at large. Making it "home alive" and not becoming a statistic is the important message in this book and these strategies should be widely communicated to those vulnerable to police targeting.
This book is a must read! Dr. Mountvarner gives very helpful tools to keep you safe.
As a mother who worries about her children and any potential encounters with the police, I am grateful for books like this that tackle head on, this sensitive subject. It speaks to ways we as parents can educate ourselves and our children on sensible ways to handle police encounters. It is so timely in times like these where too many headlines include the senseless brutality towards our young people. A book for Every parent! Well done!
